Simulation tool SiWEC upgraded to vertical axis wind turbines. Our in-house software SiWEC has been upgraded to establish an efficient simulation of vertical axis wind turbines (VAWT).
A key challange for a VAWT load calculation is the underlying aero-elastic model. SiWEC currently includes a model with double induction for front and rear passage of the rotor. The results achieved are plausible and should be validated utilizing prototype tests. Mechanical features of flexible bodies (blades, tower) are represented by modes. The respective blade modes including connection to the support structure are derived beforehand by means of FE analysis.
